Refresh Your Policy

Healthier Generation's Healthy Schools Program has been working with districts across the country since 2006 to create and implement effective wellness policies, guided by evidence-based best practices. Based on the USDA’s Final Rule under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 and in collaboration with the USDA, we have created a Model Wellness Policy to make revising your school or district's policy easier than ever.

Note: The USDA's Final Rule required all school wellness policies to be revised by June 30, 2017.

Learn more about what the Final Rule means for you and then get started below to revise your wellness policy.

5 Steps to Revise Your Wellness Policy

Step 1:

Review your state requirements and district policy to see if it meets the requirements of the Final Rule: Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Schedule a meeting with the district wellness committee or school health advisory council for further discussions and revisions.

Step 2:

Use WellSAT 3.0 to determine where revisions are needed to strengthen the language in your policy.

Step 3:

Download Healthier Generation’s 10 essential components of the local school wellness policy check-list to ensure all 10 required components are included. Then, download the Healthier Generation Model Wellness Policy to use as your guide to make revisions and updates.

Step 4:

Connect with your local school board members and attend a board meeting to identify the board's goals for the district. Ensure your updated policy aligns with these goals. Then, request to be added to the next meeting's agenda to present your revised policy.

Step 5:

Get approval and adopt the revisions, ensuring that all who are impacted are involved.
