The staff at North Miami Elementary School are doing everything they can to encourage habits for the school’s students, including adopting healthier behaviors themselves. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program has proved an invaluable resource to access tools and new ideas such as the JAMmin’ Minutes and Zumba activities. The school also participates in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program and added raised-bed herb and vegetable gardens introducing students to a variety of healthy snacks throughout the year. Staff worked with the Parent Teacher Association and the Parent Outreach Center to increased awareness of healthy foods and habits, translating materials into Creole for the school’s large Haitian population. Staff members are also using pedometers to track their steps and taking advantage of the school’s exercise room to improve their fitness.
