America's Healthiest Schools: Garrett Morgan High School
Garrett Morgan High School was named one of America’s Healthiest Schools by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The school met stringent standards set by the Alliance’s Healthy Schools Program for serving healthier meals and snacks, getting students moving more, offering high-quality physical and health education and empowering school leaders to become healthy role models. Aside from home, kids spend most of their time at school, making schools important places to influence kids’ behavior and lifelong health habits. Research shows that healthy students learn better.
The Garrett Morgan High School community is working to make their school full of physical activity options and healthy food choices. Students can attend morning workouts twice a week before school, and this year, both students and staff have been using the 2-mile indoor walking track in order to move more each day. They also participate in fun afterschool workout classes, making physical activity something to look forward to at the end of the day.
Garrett Morgan High School is working to improve the food options on campus to make the healthy choice the easy choice. The school implemented a water-only policy, serving only water for every school activity or event. Students start the day with a healthy breakfast thanks to the school’s expanded breakfast program.
Garrett Morgan High School is working to spread enthusiasm for health into their surrounding community. The school hosts a community market twice a month where, in collaboration the Cleveland Food Bank, the school provides fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy recipes and health screenings to the entire community.
