At Work with Jessica Schultz
This post is part of our #HGatWork series, giving you an inside look at the people behind our work and the leaders who further our mission to empower kids to develop lifelong healthy habits.
Jessica Schultz is Healthier Generation’s UX (User Experience) Designer. A member of the Technology team, Jessica works behind the scenes to improve our online tools for Healthy Schools Program users, families, donors, and general supporters. Her first major task upon joining the team in mid-2018 was to redesign the Healthier Generation website! A full-time traveler, Jessica embodies the Healthier Generation spirit by finding fun and unique ways to stay healthy on the go. Read on to learn more about Jessica.
What does a typical work day look like for you?
Working on mockups and updates to our digital tools, collaborating across teams to make informed decisions, and interviewing users. My work is all about improving the experience for those who interact with our digital presence – whether they be internal or external.
Your home office set-up is unique, even for our organization! Please tell us about it:
I work from my Airstream travel trailer that I live and travel in full time. I’ve spent the last two years traveling around the American West. With a mobile hotspot I can stay connected and work from anywhere there’s a decent cell signal. If I had to pick a favorite spot from the last two years, it would be mountains of Silverton, Colorado.
What are you working on right now that really excites you?
Planning how we’ll build out the Healthy Schools Program Action Plan to make it the most useful tool possible. I'm also excited to incorporate new subject matter into our offerings.
What does working at Healthier Generation mean to you?
Aligning for a common good and building tools to help those working to make healthy changes in their schools and communities.
What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment (personal or organization)?
Building myself a travel-based lifestyle that allows me to contribute to creating a healthy future.
At Healthier Generation, we place a lot of emphasis on work-life balance and living a healthy lifestyle. How do you maintain a healthy balance and “walk the talk?”
I’m an outdoor addict. My favorite activities are hiking and backpacking. I’ve backpacked the Grand Canyon rim to rim, kayaked down the Colorado River, and hiked the 40-mile Paria River Canyon which is thought to be the longest slot canyon in the world. I also recently adopted a dog and love exploring new places on our walks for sunrise and sunset.
What do you enjoy the most about working at Healthier Generation?
The people. Working with a talented team that genuinely cares.
