An online adventure equipping kids with skills and knowledge to live healthier lives.
To teach kids the basics of healthy eating and living active lifestyles, the Alliance has created a free, online, and interactive healthy living program, myGO Healthy Challenge. The game-like experience is a crash course in healthy living for ‘tweens ages 8-12. By learning how to make small changes in what kids eat and do they can make a big difference in their health over time. The information taught on myGO Healthy Challenge is founded in the expertise of the American Heart Association’s recommendations and expertise in promoting heart-healthy lifestyles. Additionally, specific tools and games were created to align with the National Health Education Standards for grades 6-8 according to the American Association for Health Education.
A Kid-Customized Tool: Kids embark on a unique journey by taking a self-assessment to evaluate their current lifestyle habits and set a health goal using their own personal calendar. Next the real adventure begins while exploring the ‘canyon of physical activity’ and the ‘cave of nutrition’ where games and activities teach them a specific skill or piece of essential information. At the end of each game, kids have the opportunity to complete a ‘Compass Challenge’ in order to receive credit for that game and earn a ‘Did-it’ (a completion badge of sorts). Upon completion of all the games they receive a printable certificate of completion.
myGO Healthy Challenge Games:
For kids who don’t have as much experience getting physically active or need help finding ways to get active at home without equipment, the Workout Video tool lets kids make their own workout video that they can work out to right in front of the computer. A drag-and-drop menu offers about 20 different physical activity ideas so it’s a new workout every time.
Portion control is a key part of practicing good nutrition. Matching Millipede is a match game where kids learn to recognize a proper serving of various foods through comparison to familiar objects such as a computer mouse, a baseball or an ipod.
The beverages kids choose to consume can have a big impact on their overall nutrition—by experimenting in the Liquid Lab kids can learn some of the pro’s and con’s of different beverages and learn how to make better choices.
Other features and games kids will find on myGO Healthy Challenge include: recipes for the family; an Activity Generator of ideas for getting active or eating healthier on your own, with friends, or with family members; the Dragon’s Den kitchen audit game, helping kids learn the importance of having healthy food items on-hand in their own pantries; an invite a friend tool; a place to pick up quick tips from the Alliance; and testimonials and motivation from other kids who have taken the myGO Healthy Challenge, and much more!
Additionally, to keep kids from spending too much time in front of the computer, a built-in timer encourages kids to sign-off after 30 minutes and pursue other activities.
