The Guidelines state that the flavored milk I offer should have less than 150 calories/8 oz., but I can’t find a vendor that meets this standard. The Alliance is committed to children getting enough calcium and recognizes that flavored milks are a leading source of calcium in children’s diets. We believe that the standard for milk established in the Alliance School Beverage Guidelines is a reasonable one, but it is going to take dairy processors a little time to reformulate flavored milk recipes. So, in the meantime, we are considering some interim changes. In recognition of the current limited availability to schools of flavored milk with less than 150 calories/8 oz. and the importance of calcium in children’s diets, flavored milk with up to 180 calories/8 oz. will be allowed under these Guidelines until August 31, 2008 so long as schools attempt to buy the lowest calorie flavored milk available to them. This transition period affords time for product reformulation and distribution. (Milk includes nutritionally equivalent milk alternatives per USDA. |
